Only Edison could speak to the dead

4 minutes of silence on 7″ vinyl record, sandpaper record sleeve. Limited edition of 100.

In their experiments with radio waves, Guglielmo Marconi and Nikola Tesla both began to receive transmissions of voices, then known as Electronic Voice Phenomenon (EVP). Tesla thought he was receiving messages from aliens while Marconi believed he was making contact with the spirit world.

When Thomas Edison heard about this, he stated that if anyone were to invent a device that could help us speak to the dead, it would be him.

Because there is only silence encoded in the record, the only way you can hear anything from it, is by fulfilling its self destructive setup. Each time you take the record out of its sandpaper sleeve, you gradually destroy it. At the same time, the increasing number of scratches on the record reveal a composition that grows over time.
